Fix the feed cost first
Feed is the only large cost you can change mid-cycle. A balanced ration usually cuts cost per kilogram of gain by 8 to 12%.

Feed and purchase price together are 91% of the cost of a fattening cycle. A 10% rise in feed cost removes almost a fifth of the profit; a 10% rise in the purchase price removes nearly a quarter. Everything else is noise by comparison.

Common questions
Before you rely on it
What mortality rate should I assume?
Between 3 and 5% on a well-managed fattening cycle with bought-in animals. Anything above 8% points to a health or quarantine problem rather than bad luck.
Should I count my own labour?
Yes. If you do not price your time, the model will tell you a marginal operation is profitable. Use what you would pay someone else for the same hours.
How long should a fattening cycle be?
Between 150 and 210 days for goats bought at 30 kg. Beyond that, daily gain slows while feed cost continues, and margin per day falls.
