Judging condition by hand
- Feel along the backbone — sharp means thin, smooth means well covered.
- Press the ribs; you should feel them with light pressure, not see them.
- Check the brisket for a firm fat pad on well-conditioned animals.
- Over-fat animals dress high but the extra weight is fat, not meat.

Meat breeds carry more muscle relative to frame and gut. A Kamori and a Teddy of equal live weight can differ by four percentage points of yield, which on a 50 kg animal is two full kilograms of meat.

Before you rely on it
What exactly is dressing percentage?
Carcass weight as a share of live weight, after removing skin, head, feet, blood and gut contents. It does not include offal, even though offal is eaten.
Why does gut fill matter so much?
An animal weighed straight off a full trough can carry three kilograms of feed and water in the rumen. You pay for it by live weight and it disappears at slaughter. Weigh in the morning before feeding.
Is a higher dressing percentage always better?
For meat, yes. But for Qurbani many buyers value frame, horns and presentation over pure yield, and pay accordingly.
