Which teeth am I counting?
Only the incisors in the lower front jaw — goats have no upper front teeth, just a hard dental pad. There are eight incisors in total.
How do I open the mouth safely?
Have someone hold the head steady. Place a thumb behind the lower lip and roll it down gently; you do not need to open the jaw at all.
Can teeth be tampered with?
Filing worn teeth to look younger happens occasionally. Filed teeth look unnaturally flat and even. Compare tooth height with the gum line, not just the width.
Is this the same for sheep?
Yes, sheep follow the same eight-incisor pattern on a similar timetable, which is why the market uses the same two-tooth and four-tooth language for both.
