Feed is usually a goat farm's largest controllable cost. Build rations from live weight and dry matter, then measure whether the resulting gain or milk pays for each kilogram purchased.
01
Calculate intake on a dry-matter basis
Growing and productive goats commonly consume about 2.5–4% of live weight as dry matter (DM) daily, depending on age, production and forage quality. A 40 kg animal at 3% needs about 1.2 kg DM, not 1.2 kg of fresh berseem: lush green fodder contains substantial water. Weigh one day's feed, estimate its DM, and use the weight calculator rather than guessing the goat's size. Dry adults may sit near the lower end; fast-growing kids and lactating Beetal or Kamori does need denser nutrition and closer condition checks.
- Maintenance
- Use quality forage and monitor condition rather than overfeeding grain.
- Growth
- Supply digestible energy and protein, then check fortnightly gain.
- Lactation
- Increase nutrient density before the doe loses body condition.
- Water
- Provide unlimited clean water, especially above 35°C.

02
Balance local forage with concentrate
Berseem is a valuable Punjab winter forage; summer rations often use mott grass, maize or sorghum fodder, while wheat straw remains a common low-cost fibre source. Straw alone cannot support growth or milk. Concentrates based on maize, barley, wheat bran and suitable oilseed cake add energy and protein; many finishing systems begin around 1–1.5% of body weight in concentrate, adjusted for forage quality and gain. Introduce grain over 7–10 days, split meals and keep enterotoxaemia vaccination current to reduce acidosis and sudden-death risk.
- Green forage
- Harvest before stems become coarse and introduce lush feed gradually.
- Straw
- Use for effective fibre, paired with protein and energy.
- Concentrate
- Compare PKR per nutrient and freshness, not bag price alone.
- Minerals
- Offer salt and a small-ruminant mineral mix suited to local advice.
03
Manage feed for profit and climate
Record the PKR cost of feed for each pen and divide it by kilograms gained. If daily feed costs PKR 100 but weight has stalled, investigate parasites, heat stress, spoiled feed or ration imbalance before buying more cake. During Punjab and Sindh summers, shift major meals to morning and evening, improve shade and airflow, and keep troughs clean; heat suppresses intake. In monsoon conditions, reject mouldy fodder and avoid abrupt moves from dry straw to lush grazing. Wean most kids around 8–12 weeks only when they consume solid feed confidently.
- Measure
- Tape or weigh a representative sample every two weeks.
- Cost
- Calculate PKR per kilogram of gain for the batch.
- Protect intake
- Use shade, clean water and cool-hour feeding in summer.
- Prevent waste
- Keep fodder off the floor and feed bags dry.
Field note
Key takeaways
- Feed roughly 2.5–4% of live weight as dry matter according to production.
- Pair low-quality straw with protein, energy, minerals and clean water.
- Introduce concentrate gradually and maintain enterotoxaemia protection.
- Track PKR per kilogram gained and correct heat, parasites or waste early.
